The Big Lockdown Music Survey: How You Will Be Paid
Our Agreement With You
We have agreed the following fees for composers and performers whose work is featured. We will issue an agreement with you which specifies the fee you will receive in return for allowing us to release your recording as part of The Big Lockdown Music Survey.
The terms will be as follows:
If your recording is selected, we will pay you a fee at the appropriate level; in return, you will allow us to showcase your recording as a digital streaming file and to retain it as part of our digital catalogue in perpetuity. This will be on an exclusive basis for the duration of the project (6 months from the launch date); at that point, once the project ends, your recording will continue to be available to stream via NMC’s website, but you will also be free to upload your recording to other platforms e.g. to approach and license your recording to alternative labels, to release it digitally through streaming services, etc.
How you will be paid
We have agreed the following rates for music creators and performers whose work is selected.
If your recording is selected for inclusion in one of our compilations, you and the other artists who perform on your recording will be entitled to a fee at the appropriate rate of duration.
NMC will pay you a one-off fee as the music creator. This will include a small additional payment covering six months exclusivity on the licensing of the master recording only, on the basis that you own the phonographic copyright in the recording*, as follows:
Up to 5 mins = a fee of £84.15
Up to 10 mins = a fee of £122.15
Up to 15 mins = a fee of £151.91
Up to 20 mins = a fee of £223.30
If you also perform on the recording, you will be entitled to a further recording fee as set out below.
*This means that you made the recording and therefore are entitled to reproduce it digitally or in physical formats. NMC is asking for 6-month exclusivity on the master recording only; you are free to use the composition for other purposes, including re-recording, during the period that your piece is part of The Big Lockdown Music Survey.
Up to 5 mins = a fee of £76.50
Up to 10 mins = a fee of £111.05
Up to 15 mins = a fee of £138.10
Up to 20 mins = a fee of £203.00
The above rates have been discussed and agreed with the MU, and an uplift is provided to allow for six months exclusivity on the master recording.
Recordings that are longer than 5 minutes
We have based the project on the assumption that recordings will be around 5 minutes long, so that we can include as much music as possible by the broadest range of creators. However, we recognise that some pieces will be shorter, and some will be longer: it is up to the different curators (Gateway Partners) based around the country to decide how to achieve the right balance from the recordings they receive and may wish to include a shorter excerpt of your work in the final selection You will be paid at the appropriate rate depending on the duration of the work featured.
NB - If you wish to submit a recording that is longer than 5 minutes, we request that you please submit a clearly marked shorter excerpt of no more than 2 minutes, together with the full recording.
- Bobby has created a 4-minute piece and performed it themselves. They submit it to The Big Lockdown Music Survey and it is selected. They will receive a fee of £84.15 as the music creator, including a 6-month exclusivity supplementary fee for licensing the recording, as well as a performance fee of £76.50. Total fee owed to Bobby is £160.65.
- Clem and Sarah have jointly performed a 15-minute 30 second piece of music, that was created by Sarah. Clem will receive a performance fee of £203.00, as will Sarah. Sarah will additionally receive a fee as the music creator of £223.30, which includes a 6-month exclusivity supplementary fee for licensing the recording. Total fees owed to Clem and Sarah respectively are £203.00 and £426.30.
- Karim has created an 11-minute piece which was performed by Daniel. However, the panel has only chosen 2 minutes to be featured in their final selection. Karim will receive a fee of £84.15 as the music creator, including 6-month exclusivity for licensing the recording, and Daniel will receive the performance fee of £76.50. Total fees owed to Karim and Daniel respectively are £84.15 and £76.50.
