Joanna Ward is a London-based composer and performer, from Newcastle upon Tyne. She has recently started a Masters in Composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she will be primarily learning with Cassandra Miller. Joanna has worked as a composer with professional musicians and prestigious arts organisations, both in the UK and beyond; her compositional practice also ranges across genres, encompassing opera, instrumental works, choral writing, as well as experimental electronic and ambient pop music. She is interested in collaged and collaborative sonic aesthetics: she often combines conventional notation with intimate, hand-drawn graphic elements, and borrows aesthetics and ideologies from popular musics. Joanna’s work is inherently political, and she sees the questioning of how to be a composer in the present day, in a way which is engaged with contemporary feminist and decolonial thinking, as essential. As a performer, Joanna is interested in contemporary and experimental repertoires for solo voice, as well as collaboration and improvisation with other performers. She is also one half of the mermaid café, a performing duo who commissions new works, re-imagines existing musics, as well as curates events and collaborates across mediums with other artists.
