Sarah Lianne Lewis

Sarah Lianne Lewis

Sarah Lianne Lewis is a Welsh composer, based in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Her music has been described as “quiet and delicate” (Matthias Roth, Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung, 2016), “full of imaginative sonorities” (Steph Power, Wales Arts Review, 2016), with “pristine dissonance and eerie ambience” (Weeping Tudor Productions, 2018).  She explores semi-improvisatory gestures within larger ensembles, and the intentional blurring of lines between acoustic and electronic sound.

Sarah studied Music and History, and a Masters in Composition at Cardiff University, and in recent years, has been commissioned by BBC Radio 3, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Cowbridge Music Festival, Wales International Piano Festival, Ensemble Télémaque, Bangor Music Festival, and the Royal Philharmonic Society & IdeasTap.

She has worked with ensembles and musicians including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Orchestra Symphonique Ose!, Quatuor Bozzini, juice vocal ensemble, the JACK Quartet, the Mivos Quartet, UPROAR ensemble, PianoCircus, the Berkeley Ensemble, Cobalt Piano Duo, the Ligeti Quartet, Nevis Ensemble, Fenella Humphreys, and Sarah Maria Sun.

Sarah is currently the Composer Affiliate with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, a tenure she holds from 2020-23.  Past residencies include a Britten Pears Young Artist residency 2013-14, Heidelberg Music Festival Composer Fellow in 2016, Quatuor Bozzini’s Composers’ Kitchen in 2017, gmem CNCM Marseille’s 'Les Musiques’ Festival in 2019, and working with Hijinx Theatre Aberystwyth Academy in Spring 2020 through Ty Cerdd’s CoDI programme.

As a composer and singer, Sarah also runs educational workshops for schools, focussing on enhancing creativity and classroom composition, and leads vocal and musicianship skills masterclasses for amateur musicians.
