Rob Campion is a composer, performer and enthusiastic exponent of new music for gamelan. His composition for bass flute and gamelan, Cathedral Grove, was performed in January 2019 as part of Southbank Centre’s SoundState Festival. He has been a member of the Southbank Gamelan Players, ensemble-in-residence at Southbank Centre, since 1988. He has performed widely throughout Europe and Asia and has worked with many composers on new commissions for gamelan, including Salvatore Sciarrino, Richard Causton, Rolf Hind, Philip Corner, the electronica duo Plaid, and the most acclaimed Javanese composer of his generation, Rahayu Supanggah.
Rob is founder and Music Director of Hammer & Bronze. He teaches gamelan at Cambridge University, mentors composers writing for gamelan and has led workshops for the Composers’ Collective at the Southbank Centre. He is a facilitator for Good Vibrations, an organisation which uses gamelan to work with people in prison, developing life and work skills through music.
