Debut Discs
NMC supports gifted early-career composers with its Debut Discs series

Debut Discs is NMC’s acclaimed showcase series for the most gifted early-career composers from the British Isles. Each year NMC as a charity needs to raise funds so we can continue to create more Debut Discs.

Peter Maxwell Davies'I'm delighted to be working with NMC to promote their emerging composers’ series, Debut Discs. In a world where composers face so many hurdles to ensure their music is heard, NMC's unwavering commitment to the sector means that composers are not overlooked. This invaluable project will give younger composers a viable platform, realistic professional development and international exposure to ensure their future as established classical composers'

In December 2011 we briefed the BA (Hons) Graphic Design students on the project and what they needed to consider when creating an album cover, and invited Huw Watkins, Helen Grime, Dai Fujikura and Sam Hayden to talk about their music and compositional process to help inspire their designs.
The final designs featured on many of the releases in this series. They were selected by a judging panel including composer Colin Matthews, graphic designer (4AD and Bella Union) Vaughan Oliver and Guardian/ BBC Radio 3 journalist Tom Service.
The collaboration allows the work of new designers to be showcased alongside the music of up-and-coming composers, forging connections between the emerging talents and illustrating the connections between the two contemporary arts forms.
