Visual responses to music have a rich history of invention and technical experimentation, enhancing the aural experience as well as being fascinating pieces of art in their own right.

Artist, theatre-maker, and opera director Tim Hopkins has tapped into this heritage as he presents two recent works – film responses to string quartets by John Woolrich, from the composer’s continuing series of compositions, A Book of Inventions.

The first is Kleine Wanderung (‘little wandering') which combines studies shot in Paris in 2017 with Hopkins's original paintings made in 2021.

The second is A Still Tragic Dance, a response both to Woolrich’s piece of the same name, and a set of objects created by visual artist Gayle Chong Kwan.  Entitled ‘Masks’, these objects were themselves responses to pieces from Woolrich’s Book of Inventions, selected by the composer for his recent performance project In Darkness Let Me Dwell (2021).
