ABOUT THE ENSEMBLES
The Nieuw Ensemble was founded in 1980 in Amsterdam. It has a unique instrumental structure, using plucked instruments such as mandolin, guitar and harp in combination with wind, string and percussion. Ed Spanjaard has been the principal conductor since 1982. The lack of literature for this group makes it as dependent upon composers, as composers have always been upon musicians. The Nieuw Ensemble has thus set out to build its own repertoire, encouraged by continuous contact with composers from different cultures, countries and generations, and long-term workshops for young composers. More than seven hundred pieces have been written for the ensemble.
The Icarus Ensemble was founded in 1994. This internationally acclaimed ensemble was present in Mexico (Festival Cervantino (1996, 2003, 2005), Festival Donatoni (1995,1996), Forum Manuel Enriquez (2002,2003,2005),Oaxaca Festival (2007), in Argentina (teatro Colon di Buenos Aires (1998), in Holland (Gaudeamus Week (1998), in Belgium (Ars Musica (2004), Bruxelles e Mons), in England (Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (2002), Festival Musica (2000) Cardiff, Swansea Festival, in Japan (Art Festival of the New Generation (the ensemble resided there) in Tokyo (2000), Switzerland (Tag fur der Neue Musik, Zurich (2004) and ISMC Lugano (2004), in Croatia (Biennale di Zagabria) (2001,2003,2005,2009), The United States (UK for NY in New York (2001), Spring Festival of the Italian Music in San Francisco (2008), Egypt (Cairo Opera House, Alexandria Opera House) (2009) in France (Festival Manca of Nice 2008), Italiart (Dijon 2009), Festival Deodat de Severac (2007), in Germany Musikhochschule 1995, 2003 and Gasteig 1996 in Munich and Theaterhaus Pragsattel of Stuttgart (2003), in Azerbaijan onorFestival (2003) in Baku, Indonesia (Jakarta and Bali in 2009), Ireland, Romania, Moldavia and Maltafest. In Italy, the ensemble has performed for nearly all the most important institutions and festivals.
Ensemble 10/10 was founded by two RLPO members, clarinettistNicholas Cox and cellist Hilary Browning. Since its first concert on 22 November 1997 at 10.10pm, it has become established as a regular feature of Liverpool concert life, under the baton of conductor Clark Rundell. 10/10’s concerts are an eclectic mixture of new commissions, world premieres and contemporary classics given in an informal atmosphere. The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic has commissioned a huge range of UK composers for the Ensemble, as well as many from abroad. 10/10 explores the best new music from around the world, but equally it actively supports local composers – concerts always include music from the North west. Ensemble 10/10 is the winner of two awards at the 2009 RPS Music Awards, the Concert Series and Festivals category and, along with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Ensemble category.
