Last week we kicked off our 25th anniversary celebrations (one of many!) with party cakes, balloons and a collection of our supporters and composers, all who have played a role in the NMC story over the last quarter-of-a-century. (See more photos from the event below.)
The venue was Club Inégales in Euston, home to Peter Wiegold’s ensemble note inégales and club for new music, improvisation, jazz, poetry, world music, RANTS and lots more. We always put on a yearly event for our Friends but we thought we’d make it extra special for our anniversary year by inviting all our composers and we were delighted that so many were able to attend.
As well as a good excuse for a few drinks and a chance to catch up with everyone, we also invited BBC presenter Tom Service, composer Peter Wiegold and composer/NMC’s Executive Producer Colin Matthews to present a light-hearted discussion on new music and the role and future of NMC.
Some selected highlights from the discussion can be listened to here:
Of course, we could not have an event without some live music. Darragh Morgan performed an extract from Joe Cutler’s re(GAIA) for solo violin which appears on our recording Opera, one of seven albums in the NMC catalogue featuring Darragh. With a piano on hand we were also treated to a selection of improvisations on a theme of Happy Birthday thanks to composers Sam Hayden, James Erber, Martin Butler, Andy Leung, Peter Wiegold and last but not least Howard Skempton, who we sneakily filmed on an iPhone.
It’s always a delight to meet our loyal and enthusiastic Friends in person and garner a few fragments of listening habits, playing experiences, composer favourites and we hope everyone enjoyed meeting our composers and industry colleagues too.
A special mention must go to Helen, our Head of Development, who was in charge of balloons and cycled along Euston Road with the '2' and '5' attached to her bike basket!
