Joanna Ward is a composer from Newcastle upon Tyne, currently reading undergraduate music at Cambridge University and studying with Patrick Brennan. Her works have been performed, commissioned, and workshopped by various ensembles and organisations from around the country, including the Royal Northern Sinfonia, St John’s College Cambridge Chapel Choir, Helios Collective (who premiered her opera hunger), and Gesualdo 6. Joanna is an alumna of the NYO Composers and Sage Gateshead’s Young Musicians Programme.
As well as composing, Joanna sings in the Jesus College Choir, the National Youth Choir, and in other choirs and opera choruses around Cambridge. She also plays electric bass in a jazz band.
"I'm excited by the resources, in terms of time, players, and technical and creative support, which I couldn't access without this opportunity working with Sound and Music. I'm sure that these resources, especially the opportunity to work collaboratively with a variety of creative people, will facilitate me in writing something new and exciting, perhaps moving in a new direction with my compositional voice, which I wouldn't have been able to do otherwise."
