Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Warwick since 1977, the Coull Quartet has performed and broadcast extensively throughout the UK, the USA and Western Europe, and has also toured China, India, the Far East, South America and Australia. The Quartet has appeared at most of the major music societies and festivals in the UK, and gives an annual series of recitals at the renowned Warwick Arts Centre, where it is actively involved in the University of Warwick’s flourishing musical life.

The Coull Quartet currently records for Somm Records, and their disc of quartets by Maw and Britten has received universal acclaim. In addition to being featured in ‘Editor’s Choice’ in Gramophone, it was also described as a ‘Benchmark Recording’ by BBC Music Magazine. Their latest two CDs, of music by Sibelius and Ian Venables have received excellent reviews in the major musical publications.

As well as performing most works from the classical and romantic repertoire, their impressive list of commissioned works includes quartets by Nicholas Maw, Robert Simpson, David Matthews and Edward Cowie.  Future plans include a tour of Brazil in the Autumn of 2012; performances of a new work by Sally Beamish for string quartet and baritone Roderick Williams, and UK-wide performances of Ping!

The Coull String Quartet
(with Tom Cutler, John Dennison, Martin Smith and David Fraser)

Ping! is a collaboration between composer Joe Cutler, the Coull String Quartet and Fusion table tennis club and explores the distinct sounds and rhythms that table tennis players create. The piece builds from intricate cross-rhythms between table tennis players, a string quartet and a soundtrack.
