Deirdre Gribbin
Belfast-born composer Deirdre Gribbin studied at the University of London, Trinity College, Cambridge and Princeton University (USA). She has been a visiting lecturer at Texas, Princeton and Berkeley Universities; she is currently a Fulbright Fellow, and was recently appointed Senior Fellow in Composition at Trinity Laban, London. From 2003 to 2005 she was Artistic Director of the Society for the Promotion of New Music.
She has won numerous awards for her work - including The Arts Foundation Award for her opera Hey Persephone! - and was a finalist in the Unesco International Rostrum of Composers 2003 for her orchestral work Empire States. Her string quartet What the Whaleship Saw was nominated for the 2005 British Composer Awards.
Her work has been featured at Lincoln Center in New York, and at Aldeburgh, Taipei and Huddersfield Festivals, as well as being showcased in the Philharmonia Orchestra's Music of Today Series in 2001. She works extensively in radio and has collaborated with director and writer Lou Stein on My Month With Carmen for BBC Radio 3, Embers starring Patrick Stewart and Dostoevsky's The Possessed.
In 2007 she completed commissions for the Philips Collection in Washington DC, the City of London Festival and a new work for the RTE Vanbrugh Quartet. She is currently writing a new opera for Wilton's Music Hall, London.
