Simon Emmerson studied sciences and music at Cambridge and at City University, where he founded the electroacoustic music studio in 1975. He joined De Montfort University in 2004 where he is now Emeritus Professor at the Institute for Sonic Creativity. He has been a composer and writer on electroacoustic music since the early 1970s.

He was founder secretary of the Electro-Acoustic Music Association of Great Britain (EMAS) in 1979 and was on the board of its successor organisation Sonic Arts Network until 2004. He has received commissions from leading groups and soloists such as Intermodulation, Singcircle, IMEB (Bourges), GRM (Paris), Jane Manning, Shiva Nova, John Wallace, Jane Chapman, Philip Mead, The Smith Quartet, Inventionen (Berlin), Sond’Ar-te Ensemble (Lisbon), BEAST (Birmingham), Darragh Morgan, Carla Rees and Heather Roche.

Widely published, he curated The Language of Electroacoustic Music in 1986, and most recently the Routledge Research Companion to Electronic Music – Reaching Out with Technology (2018). Many keynotes include ICMC 2011 (Huddersfield) and EMS Network Conference 2021 (Leicester). He was DAAD Edgard Varese Visiting Professor at TU, Berlin (2009-10) and Visiting Professor and Composer at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (Perth) in November 2016.
