Sonia Allori

Sonia Allori is a composer, performer, researcher and community music therapist. She completed a PhD in composition at Edinburgh Napier University which explored music, text and gender. In 2019 she performed in The Lost Thing (Royal Opera House/ Candoco) and in 2020 was Artist in Residence with Drake Music. Sonia is currently Development Artist with Sonic Bothy, Artist in The Sensory Collective with Independent Arts Projects and researching D/deaf performance at The Royal
Conservatoire of Scotland. In 2022 she performed as an actor/musician in Sound Symphony (Oily Cart/Independent Arts Projects) a sensory theatre show and opened Sound Festival 2022 in Aberdeen with a work commissioned by Drake Music Scotland called breathe which looked at breath and breathing post Covid-19. Sonia was selected for Sound and Music’s New Voices cohort of composers for 2022/23. Sonia is deaf and gets around on wheels! Her practice has a combination of words and music at its core but also inclusion and an insatiable curiosity for all things. She is a multi-instrumentalist and has been known to sing from time to time. When writing music Sonia uses aural imagination to ‘hear’ what she makes and often works with creative captioners in her work during rehearsals and performances and when collaborating with other artists to help fill in aural detail.
