Tyriq Baker

Tyriq Baker is a musician based in Birmingham. He is a performer in Piano, Clarinet and Bassoon, and a composer, arranger, songwriter and producer. He has composed a range of music genres, from choral music to Japanese electronic, to Latin inspired music, to film scores and contemporary music.

He began his musical journey with the recorder at the age of seven, and from there, learnt piano and clarinet to achieve a Grade 8 certificate in both, and achieved a high graded level of playing in the bassoon. He took part in the local ensembles where he lived, such as the Sandwell Youth Orchestra and the CBSO.

Whilst at Huddersfield University from 2018–21, he took part in a number of ensembles, such as the Huddersfield University Symphonic Wind Band, the Huddersfield University Big Band, the University Chamber Choir, the University based contemporary ensemble Edges Ensemble (which performed Yoko Ono’s Grapefruit at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival in 2019). As well as performing with these large ensembles, he took part with other small ensembles, collaborating with a range of different musicians.

Outside of music, Tyriq is also a keen artist, martial artist, runner, photographer, actor, DoE Silver award recipient, and an avid language learner, understanding both Japanese and French. He currently runs a Discord server to help learners in Japanese to progress with their learning in the language and teaches classes on the site. In 2020, as a Youth Ambassador for the CBSO, he, with the other Youth Ambassadors, put together a concert titled A Vision of the Future.
