Trainee Trustee 

We’re very pleased to announce a new opportunity to gain experience as a Trainee Trustee with NMC Recordings. 

Are you looking to learn more about the arts and culture sector, and how arts charities are run? 

NMC exists to champion outstanding composers across the UK and Ireland, recording and distributing their music worldwide and amplifying its reach beyond live performance. Active since 1989 and constantly evolving, our label is set up as a registered charity with a Board of Trustees. The Board is responsible for ensuring the ongoing financial health of the charity and also feeds directly into our planning, including our education work and generating new income streams. 

Our Trainee Trustee will have the chance to attend Board meetings, learn from our highly experienced Trustees, and contribute actively to our discussions about strategy and direction. You’ll also have opportunities to come along to our events, and receive training in arts governance skills. 

The role 

This is a 12-month fixed-term role. Like most charity Trustee roles it is unpaid, although we will cover travel expenses within England to attend board meetings and events. 

The Trainee Trustee will: 

  • Attend four board meetings throughout the year, contributing to discussions where relevant
  • Receive 1 day of paid-for online training in governance skills in the arts sector 
  • Receive 1-1 mentoring from a Trustee and the Executive Director
  • Have the chance to attend any of our supporter events, where you can meet the musicians we work with as well as our donors and partners
  • Have the chance to attend our sub-committee meetings, which involve deeper discussion with Board members working closely with the team
  • Gain valuable insights into the contemporary classical music sector and arts organisation management. 

Person specification: 

This role is open to anyone based in England who wants to gain new skills and knowledge in the charity sector, particularly arts and culture. It is intended for those who have little or no prior experience in charity governance.  

We are especially keen to hear from Global Majority and/or disabled applicants, who are currently under-represented on charity boards. 

Why we are doing this 

NMC is committed to helping strengthen the future of arts governance by developing the relevant knowledge and skills among a wider range of people. Trustees are critical to our sector’s vitality but, as the government’s recent Charity Sector Risk Assessment shows, many charities struggle to recruit and retain a committed board over the long term. We want to help a train a new, inclusive generation of board members who can drive forward positive change in our sector. 

Key information 

  • This is not a formal Trustee role with legal liability for the charity. The Trainee Trustee will be learning from our Trustees  without taking on any legal liability.
  • Our 2027 Board meetings will be held on Thursday 4 February, Thursday 6 May, Thursday 5 August, Thursday 4 November. You will need to be able to attend at least three of these dates either online or in-person.
  • We will offer as much flexibility as possible when scheduling mentoring and training sessions. We will work with you to find times that fit with your existing commitments.
