Alex Paxton
Alex Paxton (1990) is a composer and improvising-trombonist based in the UK Alex's work draws upon an range of classical, experimental, electronic & folk music traditions to create a unique & explosive voice. He has been elected to the 9th International Composition Seminar, awarded a commission for Ensemble Modern (I LOLLI-POP), awarded the London Sinfonietta's Writing the Future commission, and has won the RPS Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Prize, DANKWORTH JAZZ prize for composition BYE and was made a London Symphony Orchestra Panufnik Composer. Alex played and recorded his concerto OD ODY PINk'd for Jazz Musician and Royal National Scottish Orchestra (RSNO). He was a Leverhume Art Scholar with the London Philharmonic Orchestra 2016-2017: NOW WE ARE DUH-DUR and has been awarded the Harriet Cohen Memorial Music Award for his compositions. His piece SPAKE represented the UK in the Orchestral section of the International Society of Contemporary Music (ISCM). He is a commissioned contributor to John Zorn's Arcana X2021.
He is featured on the Non-Classical label (CORNCRACK DREAMS) Listen Pony Label (TELLSONG), Everest Records (SOMETIMES VOICES).
He has performed his music with leading orchestras including: Ensemble Modern (ILOLLIPOP), London Sinfonietta, The Philharmonia Orchestra (UK), Royal National Scottish Orchestra & Ensemble x.y. He has also written pieces for for ensembles including: London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Kammer Klang, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Psappa, National Youth Jazz Orchestra(UK). He has written six operas: FOR the LOVE of
THORNSTIEN SHIVER, BEL and the DRAGON, WOOLF MUSIC, EQUIVOCAL HARRIET, NOGGIN the WHALE and RAVEN's CHILD hosted by: English National Opera, Helios Collective, Tete a Tete Festival, Second Movement Opera.
Alex has also written extensively music for community settings and for young performers: (MUFFIN, FLY like a KITCH EN, the VERY SM ELLY STABLE, I LOVE the way YOU PICK YOUR NOSE). Alex has worked across the UK as an educator in creative-music making and is composition tutor on the National Youth Orchestra(GB). Alex studied jazz-trombone and composing, as a scholar, at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Collage of Music in London.
