Michael Zev Gordon
Born in London, Michael Zev Gordon has written works for many leading artists, including Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, the Composers' Ensemble, Orkest de Volharding, the Carducci Quartet, New Music Players, Concordia, Sarah Leonard and Exaudi. His works have been performed and broadcast widely in the UK and abroad, including at such festivals as Aldeburgh, Lichfield, Brighton, Huddersfield and Spitalfields. Awards include the 2004 Prix Italia for A Pebble in the Pond, an extended radiophonic work on the subject of memory; and winner of the choral category of the 2008 British Composer Awards, for This Night, written for / the choir of King’s College, Cambridge, Stephen Cleobury and the cellist Anton Lukoszevieze.
In recent years, Gordon has been a featured composer at the Park Lane Group series at London’s South Bank and on the CoMA summer school. Major premieres have included his Oboe Concerto ‘The fabric of dreams’, given by Nicholas Daniel and the Britten Sinfonia at the Snape Proms, a revised version of Plain Hunting by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Zsolt Nagy, and the first London performance of Red Sea by the BBC Singers at the Spitalfields festival.
Current projects include a new work for piano and ensemble, commissioned by the London Sinfonietta, and two works for this year’s Cheltenham Festival: a song cycle to the poetry of Osip Mandelstam and a concert arrangement of A Pebble in the Pond.
Gordon is Senior Lecturer in Composition at the University of Southampton and Professor of Composition at the Royal College of Music.
