NMC's Founder and Executive Producer Colin Matthews pays tribute to Arnold Whittall

I am very sad to learn of the death of Arnold Whittall at the age of 90. One of our earliest supporters, he had a profound knowledge of contemporary music and musicology, with a particular focus on analysis. From 1982 - 1996 he was Professor of Musical Theory and Analysis at King's College London, subsequently becoming Emeritus Professor. His many books include studies of Britten and Tippett, Jonathan Harvey and most recently Schoenberg. He was a prolific contributor to Gramophone and Musical Times. I knew him from 1964 when he set up an MA course in analysis at the University of Nottingham. As chair of the Holst Foundation he oversaw the major grants that underpinned NMC in the 1990s and 2000s. I will miss him greatly.
