Exploring the Limits of Violin Performance

16th February 2022

Films Huddersfield Contemporary Records

Each piece in Dejana Sekulic's new album Temporality of the Impossible explores a distinct approach to contemporary violin performance that pushes it to the limit.

These three short films demonstrate some of the themes, ideas and techniques explored on the album.

Clara Iannotta: dead wasps in the jam jar (i)

In dead wasps in the jar-jam (i), Clara Iannotta extends the violin with three preparations - metal spiral paperclips placed on two points of the A and D strings and one on the G string; a metal mute; and a metal thimble - that transform and destabilise the usual relationship between finger, string and sound.

Dario Buccino: Finalmente il tempo é intero nº16

Dario Buccino creates his compositions using chance processes and a system he refers to as HN, built on the hic et nunc (here and now) principle. Although extremely challenging, Finalmente il tempo é intero nº16 is a playground for the imagination.

Rebecca Saunders: Hauch

Hauch by Rebecca Saunders explores the quietest timbral nuances of the highest register of the two lowest violin strings, revealing the fragile voices contained within them.
